Latin in High School 03 03 2026

" It was like right at my turn to take a foreign language in high school that they no longer offered Latin?

But this brings up the phrase:

Illegitimi non carborundum"

Wikipedia calls that dog latin?

Very interesting discussion of it there.

"Don't let the bastards wear you down"

So if there is an issue with that phrase being pure latin.  Then what happens when you type

"Don't let the bastards wear you down" into Google translate and have it translated to English?

You get:

"no permitto nefarius defetigat te"

But when you see the google translate and you compare it to the nitpicked encyclopedic discussion entry, you really can't take issue with it?

"Illegitimi non carborundum"  Was used in WWII.  Was used by a United States President.  And indeed a Jewish man identified with it so much that he had it put on his gravestone (at the Wikipedia entry)

Illegitimi non carborundum - Wikipedia

Also when you type carborundum in the google translate and presume it to be a latin word to translate into English it gives you "Keep grinding"

So is or is not carborundum a latin word?

Borrowed from:

TLL Open Access: Thesaurus linguae Latinae

No, it isn't far off at all.
