Want to improve Fuel Economy? 05 27 2019

Want to improve Fuel Economy?  05 27 2019

I just learned that the absolute best way to improve gas mileage is to drive like your car has a broken motor mount!  What does that mean?  It means a very gradual acceleration from every stop.  And sure other drivers might get angry at you.  But you know what?  That Type A personality trait is something that our Government needs to create a Comprehensive Branch in order to address.  And in effect we could cut a lot of the costs out of a great many other branches of the Gov in the process.

So I was driving this way with my 2011 Ford Edge which has 56,000 miles on it today.  And on the Expressway I was getting 35 miles per gallon for very long distances!  It is not rated to be that good.

So what is the issue?  The issue is that cars today are made with soft motor mounts which absorb the vibration from acceleration so that the general driver doesn't feel it.  Every time you put your foot on the accelerator power and therefore mileage is lost to that soft motor mount!  Does it save the engine or transmission?  I doubt it.  Because the more the engine moves in the engine compartment during acceleration the greater the chances of it wearing down quicker?

So should automakers make all cars with harder motor mounts?  It is like one of those issues where if you added up all the fuel savings of the entire public in the process you would be scratching your head in disbelief!

But this guy wrote a good article on motor mounts, if you want to read some more about them.
