Better Gas Mileage and Brake Drag 06 11 2018

Better Gas Mileage and Brake Drag 06 11 2018

What is brake drag and how does it cause bad gas mileage?  Very simply it the brake pads putting too much pressure on the brake discs when your foot is not on the brake pedal.  And that decreases Gas Mileage.

So what is the likely number one cause?  It could be that the brake fluid needs to be bled out of the brake system and replaced by new fluid.  Why?  Because that is hydraulic fluid.  And it tends to get water in it.  It also tends to lose its boiling point.  Both over time.  What happens then?  The hydraulic effect of it no longer works as it should.  And when you take your foot off the brake pedal the upward pressure of the brake pedal does not retract the pads from the brake disc because the brake fluid has water in it.

What happens when you put water in a vacuum?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG7nsZkVZc0

Your right rear wheel is usually the farthest from the master cylinder so that is where the problem is likely to occur first?

Ever get new discs and pads at a dealer and they didn't bleed the brakes?  They should have.  It should be standard.  In fact it likely should be done before new pads and discs are needed.

But why didn't they bleed the brakes?  Because it is a two man operation and it often ends up being a comedy of errors.  Two men are supposed to coordinate.  One puts his foot down on the brake pedal and the other then closes the bleeder valve he had just opened.  Then when the man in the car takes his foot off the pedal the other man starts to open the valve again as he tells the first to put his foot back on the pedal.  Usually the mechanics are both alcoholics?

Is it Disc or Disk?  Why any difference?  Who knows.  About the same as is it Gustav or George.

And the heat from that increased friction is transferred to the wheel bearing and steering components likely leading to early failure because of metal fatigue?  Could be catastrophic.

It is part of a buy new replacement economy rather than respect and care for what you have.  Take individual responsibility for your life rather than just buy it new.  Who doesn't want us to be that way?  Someone that is capitalizing our lives.  Views us like pieces of meat.  Doesn't want us to do or attempt complicated things because it can't follow along and doesn't want to be tempted to do what it see's in its mind eye because it knows it will fail.

What is all that they care about?  Buy more and more oil from them at a higher price.

And there are special tools that allow just one person to bleed the brakes.
