As I read this it looks like an immune system response was happening in reaction to food.
Scientists discovered what was causing the buildup.
They then sought to develop a product to treat it.
That development led to the end product of a fermentation process being the product used to treat statins.
Here is the slight of hand. He was researching to find antibiotics when he found a product used to treat cholesterol buildup?
I am not that stupid! It looks like intent was rewarded in order to create a cash cow.
Is the product that they developed really something that has been found to step in and bring an end to the natural fermentation process?
He was fermenting a fungus?

It itself can infect the bone, spleen and kidneys.
Here is the real question, how many people who take statins remain obese? Any question like that that they knew the answer to they would never tell you or the public.
