In order to not deceive yourself you must not deceive others.
And also tightly knit with that,
In order to not deceive others you must not deceive yourself.
You might think of that philosophy in terms of personal development.

Ps. And you might also ask this question, "I know that this person is trying to deceive me, have they also deceived themselves?"
And then if you determine that they have indeed deceived themselves you come to the conclusion that is pitiful and therefore sad.
