Diameter of the Moon in miles: 2,158.8
You look at the moon virtually every night. Did you ever stop to wonder how big it is? It is 2,158.8 miles in diameter.
From that you get some sense of how big the earth is. Knowing that the earth is 7,917.5 miles in diameter. The moon's diameter is 27.2% of the diameter of the earth. But surface area is calculation for another day.
So lets get the facts for the diameters of the planetary bodies in the whole solar system, (not including other moons or newly discovered objects at this point.
In order from center out.
Sun 865,370
Mercury 3,031.9
Venus 7,520.8
Earth 7,917.5
Moon 2,158.8
Mars 4,212.3 (Right there didn't you somehow think Mars was bigger? It isn't.)
Jupiter 86,881 (Huge!)
Saturn 72,367 (Huge!)
Uranus 31,518
Neptune 30,599
Pluto 1,476.8
And with the sun as big as it is, how many miles is it from the earth to the sun? "Currently" 94,141,000 miles. So that is pretty far. But no so far when you consider a "trip" to Mars takes about 7 months.
How far was it to Mars? Currently 205,390,000 miles but could be as low as 33,900,000, depending on orbit positions.
And how far is it from Earth to the farthest planet from Earth, Pluto. Way way out there rounded to: 3,129,000,000

Distance of the Earth to the Sun in relation of the Diameter of the Sun. So lets presume that the distance from one to the other stat is from surface to surface. Then take the radius of the sun and add it to that for a what the heck reason. So 94,141,000 + (865,370/2)= 94,573,865. So the distance to the center of the sun from the surface of the earth is 94,573,865. The diameter of the sun to that distance is 865,370/94,573,865= .0091% So a little less than 1%. So lets phrase it out this way, the diameter of the sun is 1% of the distance of the sun from earth. It is an interesting fact to consider with regard to Solar Energy and Ecology.
