The Murphy Family

The ancient name of the family was “Murchada”, signifying “superior”. The founder of the family was Fiacha, King of
Leinster, a province of Ireland, A.D. 144.
The chiefs of the clan were styled “Lords of Hy Reiling, and
their possessions were located in the present countries of Wexford and
Cork. The family seat was in a locality
now known as Castle Ellis.
During the Williamite Wars in Ireland, the Murphy Family supported
King James. With the defeat of James,
they were dispossessed of their estates in Wexford. Under subsequent English rulers other
branches of the family lost their holdings in other parts of Ireland.
